The South Shore Bird Club (SSBC) was founded in 1946 and the first members set out to explore and share the birds and birding habitats of the South Shore of Massachusetts.

We still concentrate on a variety of mainly local field trips. Many trips involve car-pooling.

In case of inclement weather please check back on this website or contact leader.

Non-members are always welcome.

Please read and adhere to the ABA birding code of ethics

Click the button for Current Program below, or scroll down to instantly see the next few trips.

Interior South Shore Localities

Saturday, March 21, 2026, 8:00 AM

Wayne Petersen: 701-206-5716, reedpetersen44@gmail.com

Meet: Shaw’s Plaza, Rte. 58, near intersection of Rte. 14 in Hanson (to the left of Shaw’s in front of the Dollar Store).

Mid-March is a fine time to intercept waterfowl and other early spring migrants on their way north. Experience has shown that many of these species often appear in inland wetlands, flooded fields, and surrounding moist thickets. We'll check such popular localities as Burrage Pond WMA in Hanson, fields in Halifax and Middleboro, and likely a few localities in the Bridgewaters. We should see some Tree Swallows, Eastern Phoebes, Fox Sparrows, and displaying Red-shouldered Hawks among other species, along with hearing early calling amphibians and seeing a few flowering shrubs and spring flowers. Always a nice taste of early spring.

Many species are on the move, whether coming, going, or just passing through - not only birds but mammals like North Atlantic Right Whales. We'll head up to Race Point in Provincetown and see what's out there. Afterward, we'll slowly migrate our way back, visiting other locations on the Outer Cape along the way. This trip involves several miles of walking over loose sand.
